Is Yelp Still Worth It for Contractors and Home Service Businesses?

Yelp now feeds reviews into ChatGPT and Apple Maps. Here is what HVAC, plumbing, roofing and auto repair owners should do with their Yelp page in 2026.
Yelp reviews are important for contractors

The short answer

Yes. For most contractors, a claimed and complete Yelp page is still worth the time, and it matters more in 2026 than it did a few years ago. Yelp now feeds reviews and business details into ChatGPT and Apple Maps, so a weak Yelp page can follow you into AI answers. Paying for Yelp Ads is a separate decision that depends on your trade and how well you track leads.

Why Yelp matters again in 2026

For years, a lot of contractors wrote Yelp off as a restaurant site. Google got the calls and Yelp got ignored. Two changes make that harder to justify now.

In July 2026, Yelp signed a licensing deal with OpenAI. According to MarTech’s coverage of the Yelp and ChatGPT deal, ChatGPT can now show Yelp reviews, ratings, photos and business details when someone asks for a local recommendation, with Yelp branding and links. The companies also plan to bring Yelp’s Request a Quote feature into ChatGPT so people can contact service providers directly. Search Engine Land notes the deal is not exclusive and that Yelp already licenses its data to Apple Maps.

Apple Maps also has a Yelp-powered Request a Quote button on business pages. PhoneArena reported that it covers more than 200 categories, including home services and auto repair.

Here is what that means in real life. When a homeowner in Goodyear asks ChatGPT for a good AC repair company nearby, or taps an HVAC listing in Apple Maps on an iPhone, Yelp data may be part of what they see. If your Yelp page is unclaimed, shows old hours, or has three reviews from 2019, that is the version of your business the AI is working with. We cover more of how this works in why ChatGPT recommends your competitors instead of you.

Yelp vs Google Business Profile for contractors

Google is still the main source of calls for most service businesses. Yelp is a supporting listing. Here is how the two compare in practice.

If your Google Business Profile is not in good shape, fix that first. Then give Yelp an afternoon to get it right.

Yelp review rules work differently

This is where most contractors get burned. On Google, you can send a text after the job asking for a review. On Yelp, that breaks the rules.

Yelp’s Don’t Ask for Reviews policy says businesses should not ask customers, friends or family to review them, should not have staff compete for reviews, and should never offer discounts or freebies in exchange. Yelp also says its software may not recommend reviews that look prompted.

That software is strict. In Yelp’s 2025 Trust and Safety Report, about 70% of the roughly 22 million reviews posted that year were recommended and 17% were not. Yelp also says it filtered out nearly half a million reviews it identified as AI-generated.

So a plumber in Avondale who texts 40 happy customers a Yelp link may watch most of those reviews land in the “not currently recommended” section, where they don’t count toward the star rating. A sudden burst of reviews can also draw a warning on the page.

What Yelp does allow: pointing people to your Yelp page in general, a “Find us on Yelp” sticker on your trucks, and embedding Yelp reviews on your website. Yelp lists these in its guide to getting reviews without asking. On Google, a direct ask is still the right move. Our post on what works better than buying Google reviews covers that side.

Which trades get the most out of Yelp

Yelp’s value depends on the trade and how customers shop for it.

  • Auto repair, collision and transmission shops. Drivers picking a shop tend to read reviews on more than one site before they drop off a car. Yelp deserves real attention here, alongside the basics of auto repair SEO.
  • HVAC and plumbing. Most emergency calls still come from Google Maps. Planned jobs like system replacements and water heaters are where Request a Quote leads from Yelp, Apple Maps and ChatGPT can add up. Yelp is one piece of a full HVAC SEO plan.
  • Roofing. Homeowners researching a big replacement read reviews across platforms. A thin Yelp page can make a roofer in Peoria look less established than the competitor down the street. It fits into roofing SEO as a trust signal.
  • Artificial turf and landscaping. These jobs sell on photos. Before-and-after shots on your Yelp page do a lot of the work.

How to set up your Yelp page in one afternoon

  1. Claim your page through Yelp for Business. Search your business name first. Many contractors already have an unclaimed page that a customer created.
  2. Match your business name, phone number and service area exactly to your Google Business Profile and website. Mismatched details confuse Yelp, Google and AI tools. Our post on local citations vs back links explains why this consistency matters.
  3. Pick specific categories, such as Heating and Air Conditioning or Water Heater Installation, instead of one broad label.
  4. Set your service area to the cities you actually work in, such as Surprise, Glendale, Buckeye and Waddell.
  5. Turn on messaging and Request a Quote, and install the Yelp for Business app so you can reply fast.
  6. Add 15 to 20 real job photos. Before-and-after shots, taken with the customer’s permission, work well.
  7. Write a plain description: what you do, where you do it, your license, and what sets you apart.
  8. Reply to every review, good or bad, within a few days. Our guide on how contractors should respond to negative reviews works on Yelp too.
  9. Add a Yelp link to your website and a sticker to your trucks. Then stop there. Don’t send Yelp review requests.

Should you pay for Yelp Ads?

The free page and Yelp Ads are two different decisions. Yelp sales reps call a lot of contractors, and some owners come away thinking they have to pay to show up. They don’t. A claimed page with solid reviews can appear in Yelp search, Apple Maps and ChatGPT without any ad spend.

If you do test ads, track them. Ask every caller how they found you or use a dedicated tracking number, and give the test 60 to 90 days. Judge it by booked jobs, not leads. Quote requests often go to several companies at once, so the shop that replies first usually wins.

For most contractors, the bigger win is making sure Yelp, Google, Apple and your website all tell the same story. That consistency is a core part of generative engine optimization, and it gives AI tools a clear reason to recommend you. Our local SEO services cover listings across all of these platforms if you’d rather hand it off.

Frequently asked questions

Does Yelp affect my Google ranking? Not directly. Yelp reviews do not count toward your Google star rating. A consistent, well-reviewed Yelp page does help confirm your business details across the web, and Yelp pages often show up in Google results for searches like best plumber in Peoria.

Can I ask customers to leave a Yelp review? Yelp’s guidelines say no. Businesses should not ask anyone for a Yelp review, and Yelp’s software may filter reviews that look solicited. You can put a Find us on Yelp sticker on your trucks and link to your Yelp page from your website.

Why are some of my Yelp reviews not recommended? Yelp’s automated software decides which reviews to recommend, and reviews that look prompted or come from less active Yelp users are more likely to be filtered. Yelp reported that about 17% of reviews posted in 2025 were not recommended.

Does ChatGPT use Yelp reviews? Yes. Under a 2026 licensing deal, ChatGPT can show Yelp reviews, ratings, photos and business details in local recommendations, with links back to Yelp.

Do I need to pay Yelp to show up? No. A free, claimed Yelp page can appear in Yelp search, Apple Maps and ChatGPT results. Yelp Ads are optional and only worth testing if you can track booked jobs from them.
